Not Sure Where to Stay in Rome? Here’s What You Need to Know
Rome is one of my favourite cities in the world, but like any big city, figuring out where to stay in Rome Italy can be tricky. It’s definitely not something to decide in a rush as it can totally shape your whole trip. Each neighbourhood has its own charm and feel, so it really depends on what kind of traveller you are and the trip you’re planning.
Whether it’s your first time, you’re looking for the best food, or just after a quieter corner of the city, this guide breaks down the best places to stay in Rome Italy in 2025.
I’ll detail four great neighbourhoods – Centro Storico, Trastevere, Testaccio and Vatican/Prati; with pros and cons of each of them to help you find your perfect spot in the Eternal City.

CENTRO STORICO (HISTORIC CENTRE OF ROME)
Centro Storico is without a doubt the best neighbourhood to stay in Rome for first-time visitors or short stays. You’ll be right in the middle of all the main attractions in Rome, such as the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona; and surrounded by gorgeous old buildings and beautiful piazzas. It’s the best area to stay in Rome for sightseeing since you can walk pretty much everywhere.
That said, this kind of convenience comes at a price. Centro Storico isn’t cheap, especially during peak season. But depending on your plans. It might still be worth it, as you’ll likely save money (and time) by not needing to use Rome’s public transport much.
Since Centro Storico is one of the most popular areas to stay in Rome, it can get quite busy, especially during peak season. If you prefer a quieter area, consider staying in nearby neighbourhoods like Prati or Testaccio.

TRASTEVERE
Trastevere is one of the most charming and picturesque areas to stay in Rome and one of my personal favourites. It’s full of narrow cobbled streets and medieval-looking houses. Fun fact: this was once a neighbourhood favoured by Roman aristocrats like Julius Caesar, who even had a villa here.
The name “Trastevere” comes from the Latin Trans Tiberim, meaning “beyond the Tiber”, and that’s exactly where it’s located, on the left side of the river Tiber, just opposite the Vatican.
Trastevere is one of the best areas to stay in Rome for nightlife and food lovers. It’s packed with cozy trattorias, lively bars, and places serving classic dishes and some of the best pizza in Rome. (If you’re looking for food tips, check out my favourite restaurants in Trastevere.)
That said, Trastevere does have a few downsides that are worth mentioning. There’s no metro station nearby, so you’ll be walking a bit more to reach the city centre (about 20-25 minutes walk) unless you take the tram. The area may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns as it’s full of uneven cobbled streets. Also, if you’re after a quiet night, bear in mind that the Trastevere’s nightlife can get lively.

TESTACCIO
Testaccio is one of the best areas to stay in Rome for food lovers. It’s known for its incredible food scene and more affordable accommodation options, making it a great option for those seeking affordable places to stay in Rome. If you decide to stay in this area, don’t miss the Mercato di Testaccio, a must-visit for food lovers.
Beside its food, Testaccio is also popular for its impressive street art created by both local and international artists, adding colour and urban culture to the area. Some of the most famous murals include “Ave Cesare” and “Kindness”, both located at the Testaccio Market; and “Jumping Wolf”.
However, the main downside of Testaccio is its distance from some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Trevi Fountain. Although the area is well connected by metro and bus, if you’re hoping to step out of your accommodation and be immediately surrounded by ancient ruins, this may not be the ideal location for you.

VATICAN / PRATI
If you are looking for a family-friendly area in Rome or a peaceful district that it’s still relatively close to the main attractions in Rome, the Vatican or Prati districts are excellent options. They have more of a residential feel without the touristic hustle and bustle that you would get in the centro storico.
The area of Prati is known for its wide boulevards and elegant buildings. The streets have spacious pavements that are great for strolling, especially if you have a push chair. It’s a calm area, making it a good choice for travellers who want to explore Rome at a slower pace.
These areas are well-connected via metro and several bus lines and they are just a short walking distance from attractions like St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums or Castel Sant’Angelo. There is also enough local restaurants and shops to keep you entertained every evening.
