History of the Trevi Fountain Rome

The Trevi Fountain, or La Fontana di Trevi, is the most famous baroque fountain in the world. Its name derived from Trivium (in Latin) or Tre Via (in Italian) as it is located at the junction of three streets.

It was originally designed by Bernini and commissioned by the Pope Urban VIII, but the project was abandoned when the Pope died. The construction started 50 years later, in 1732, when it was commissioned by Pope Clement XII and redesigned by the architect Nicola Salvi.

It was finally completed 30 years later, in 1762, by Giuseppe Pannini.

The 26-metre-high structure contains a statue of Neptune being pulled into the sea on a shell-shaped carriage with two winged horses. These statues are said to represent the sea’s changing tides.

The sculptor Filippo della Valle completed the fountain with the two additional statues next to Neptune, one on the left representing Abundance and Health on the right.

For its preservation, the Trevi Fountain has gone through several restoration periods to cover cracks and remove any colour discolouration caused by smog, being the one completed by Fendi in 2013 one of the most remarkable ones.

La Fontana di Trevi has been featured in numerous films such as La Dolce Vita or Angels and Demons.
