Rome Public Transport Guide
Comprehensive Guide to Getting Around Rome with Transport Tips and Options
Rome has a very well-connected public transport network including metro, buses, trams and regional trains, making it convenient for tourists to explore its historical sites and attractions. The shared fare system allows easy transfers between different means of transport.
You can also opt to purchase a Roma Pass for 48 or 72 hours, which includes unlimited access to public transportation in Rome, as well as entry tickets to the city’s main attractions.
Rome Metro
The Rome metro is a convenient and cost-effective way to get around the city, which makes it a very popular option amongst tourists. It consists of 3 simple lines (colour coded): Line A (orange), Line B (blue) and Line C (green) that cover the majority of Rome city centre and surrounding areas.
It runs every day from 5:30AM to 11:30PM (slightly later on weekends).
For further information on tickets and routes, visit my Rome Metro guide.
Rome Bus
The Rome bus system is a recommended way to get around the city as it covers an extensive area of Rome, including some of the areas not reached by metro, such as the Trastevere neighbourhood.
Although using the Rome bus network may seem a bit daunting at first, it is fairly simple to use plus this option will provide you with incredible panoramic views of Rome’s top attractions while traveling.
There are 350 bus lines running during the day, from 6:00AM until midnight approx., and 22 at night.
For further information on tickets and routes, visit my Rome Bus guide.
Rome Tram
The Rome Tram is generally not considered as popular as the metro or the bus, mainly because its network is not as extensive. It consists of 6 lines: R2, R3, R5, R8, R14 and R19 that cover primarily the central and southern areas of Rome.
The tram runs every day from 5:30 AM until midnight.
For further information on tickets and routes, visit my Rome Tram guide.
Rome Taxi
The official taxis in Rome licensed by the city council are white, with the word ‘TAXI’ on the roof and the Rome City Council symbol on the front doors. They operate 24 hours.
Fares for Rome taxis are determined by a metered system, which is calculated based on distance and time spent, with potential additional charges for luggage or late night hours.
For detailed information on fares and how to book a taxi in Rome, check my Rome Taxi guide.
Rome Train
The Rome train system, encompassing the railway network and the metro, is an efficient and well-connected transportation option for residents and tourists travelling to Rome’s surrounding regions.
There are several types of trains in Rome depending on the area covered, the speed and the price range. These include the Leonardo Express, high-speed trains, InterCity and InterCity Notte, Regional, and urban trains.
Fore detailed information on the Rome train system, including stations and how to book tickets, you can check my Rome Train guide.
Rome Hop On Hop Off Bus
The Hop On Hop Off buses are a very popular option for tourists. These double-deckers buses with open tops run everyday from 9:00AM to 6:00PM, approximately. They follow a set route, stopping at Rome’s main attractions.
They allow the passengers to hop off and rejoin any bus as many times as they want. While on board, passengers will be able to use an insightful audio guide. The buses come pretty often, usually within 15 or 20 minutes.
For more information on all the options and how to book tickets please check my Rome Hop On Hop Off Bus guide.
Roma Pass Tickets with Unlimited Public Transportation |
If you are visiting Rome for a few days, my recommendation is to book a Roma Pass. This includes unlimited public transportation for 48h (or 72H) from the fist validation. As well as unlimited metro, bus and tram transport, it also includes skip-the-line admission to up to 2 attractions in Rome (including famous ones such as the Colosseum, Borghese Gallery or Castel Sant’Angelo, among others) and discounted admission tickets to other attractions.
