Tourist information on how to get a taxi in Rome

Although there are several taxi companies in Rome, the official taxis licensed by the city council are easily identifiable. They are white, with the word ‘TAXI’ on the roof and the Rome City Council symbol on the front doors. They have a green/red light that indicates if they are free or not.

The taxis in Rome operate 24 hours.

Although taxis in Rome are generally considered safe, in my option I wouldn’t say they are as good as other transport options, such as the metro, for tourists. Traffic in Rome is usually busy, and the taxi rates are quite high compared to other European cities, making it an inefficient way for visitors to get around.

Taxi Fares Rome

The Rome Taxi operates on a metered fare system, which is calculated based on distance and time spent, with potential additional charges for luggage or late night hours.

If you want to calculate how much taxis in Rome cost, you can use a taxi fare estimator or refer to the following tables to estimate your journey’s price:

Fixed Fee Cost
Min. fixed fee from 6:00AM until 10:00PM on weekdays €3
Min. fixed fee from 10:00PM on weekdays €7
Min. fixed fee on Sundays and public holidays €5

Progressive Taximeter Fare (Speed > 20 km/h) Cost
T1: applicable until you reach €11 €1.14 /km
T2: applicable until you reach €13 €1.35 /km
T3: applicable until you finish the journey. €1.66 /km

For any rides with a speed of less than 20 km/h, the cost will be €28 per hour.

There may also be supplementary charges for more than four passengers, you are carrying more than one piece of large luggage (€1 per bag after the first free one) or if you pre-book the taxi (€4).

There is a 10% reduction in the fare on certain circumstances, such as journey to hospitals in Rome or women travelling alone from 10:00PM to 6:00AM. You can check more details on the official Rome taxi fare website page.

Taxi from Rome Airport to City Centre

Both airports in Rome are well-connected by taxi services. The journey from the city centre to Fiumicino airport, or viceversa, typically takes around 45 minutes and has a fixed fare of €50.

If you are landing at Ciampino airport instead, the journey to the city centre is a bit cheaper, €30 approximately, and it takes around 40 minutes.

These fares include luggage and are for a maximum of four passengers.

For these types of journeys in Rome, booking a private transfer can generally be cheaper compared to traditional taxis. Private transfers can accommodate large groups of people and luggage, and they ensure no waiting time at taxi queues. They offer both long-distance travel and taxi rides within the city. Personally, I believe the main advantages are being able to see the price and type of car before payment, as well as tracking the live location of the driver on a map.

Do taxis in Rome take credit cards?

The short answer is yes – any taxi in Rome must have a payment terminal. However, my recommendation is to check with the taxi driver beforehand or to have some cash with you in case the terminal doesn’t have signal or your card isn’t accepted (like it happens with American Express).

Is there Uber in Rome?

Due to some laws, you can’t find in Rome the standard low-cost Uber service that you would find in most of the European cities. However, you can book the premium Uber services (UberBlack, Lux and Van) via their app.

FAQs

Do you tip taxis in Rome?

Tipping taxi drivers in Rome is not mandatory although most locals tend to round up the final fare. It’s completely up to you but it is always a nice touch if the driver has been helpful loading and unloading luggage.
